iPhoto11 upgrade: how long should I wait?

Having installed iPhoto11 and previously 'broken' my iPhoto library by force quitting during the 'upgrade' process, I contacted Apple Support and spoke to someone who helped me restore a previous library from a backup. I am now waiting for iPhoto11 to complete the upgrade process for a second time on a 27Gb photo library. So, how long should this process take before I finally lose my rag and force quite this hopeless programme? So far it's been running for a day and a half and the blue completion line is exactly where it was when it started, about 4mm from the end! The spinning ball has never been so busy.
The very helpful Apple Support person said that his upgrade took 1.5 days. "You just have to leave it running"!! I have read reports of some people's libraries taking over three days to upgrade. What kind of software needs this amount of time to install?
How can i be sure it's actually doing something? If I go into the a
Apple menu and chose Force Quit it records that iPhoto is "not responding" but in my limited experience, this might not actually be the case.
Anyone else waited for ages for the upgrade process to actually finish?
Chris
