I'm trying to boot from an external drive but my mac isn't seeing it. The computer is a new mini and the drive is a seagate usb 3.0. I formatted the drive then erased it to make a journaled, encrypted drive. After backing up with superduper I try to set it as the startup disk using system preferences. But when the computer reboots it is using the internal hard drive as the boot disk. The external is mounted /dev/disk4, but / is mounted on /dev/disk2.
I have tried to hold the option key down when booting, but only the internal hard drive shows up. I tried to bless the drive as well. No errors are reported, but it doesn't help.
If the external hard drive is not encrypted then it works as a boot drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to figure out why the drive isn't seen at boot time?
