iTunes database corrupt? What happened to iTunes?

OK. I was looking at my iTunes under 'Artists' and looking at Sammy Hagar, and noticed an album missing (The Essential Red Collection) so I went looking for it. I found it under 'Compilations' of all things, apparently because either CDDB, or iTunes decided that because the one song, 'Bad Motor Scooter' was by Montrose, it was a compilation.

Surprised, and looking to make this reside in the Sammy Hagar artists list rather than the Compilations area, I proceeded to right click on the first track, and uncheck the 'Part of a compilation' choice and clicked 'OK' and it disappeared, and appeared in the Sammy Hagar artist list. 'OK' I thought, and proceeded to clear the check box on all of the other tracks and one by one they all disappeared. "Ah hah!' I thought, they are all in Sammy Hagar, in one entry (The Essential Red Collection) and all is right with the world.

Well, except that when I went to Sammy Hagar artist list, there were TWO entries for 'The Essential Red Collection', ONE with only the Montrose track in it, and the other with the rest of the album's tracks. Odd I thought. So I right clicked on the single track to see what the Info showed. There was no 'Album Artist' so I added 'Sammy Hagar' to that line and saved it, thinking that it would *pop* into the other listing, but it did not. So I right clicked it again, and changed the Artist to 'Sammy Hagar' thinking that would fix it. Uh, no, that didn't work either...

So I right clicked again, and the box that came up looked very much different than the normal box, for one thing all the entries were blank, so I right clicked on the ablum header that contained that track, and added 'Sammy Hagar' to the Album Artist entry, and that didn't work either. Trying to figure this out, I right clicked on 'The Essential Red Collection' entry, and cleared all of the information that was in that and clicked 'OK', and all of the tracks disappeared. ALL of the Sammy Hagar tracks disappeared! 'OMG!!!' I thought. I killed Sammy Hagar! I looked through the usual places where random, unlabeled music would be, and found nothing. 'Oh great', I thought, 'It's all gone!'. Thoughts of digging through storage to retrieve the physical CD's to repopulate iTunes popped into my mind with all of the fondness of a root canal, and I tried Search.

Hah, found them, in 'Unknown Album' with 'Unknown Artist' also listed as attributes... OK, I went looking for 'Unknown Artist', It's not there in the Artist list. Checked for 'Unknown Album', and I can't make anything close to sense in the way that tab sorts things, but from what I could tell, it wasn't there either.

So... I took to finding the tracks using search, and editing the Info from there. Now I have ALL of the tracks in the Sammy Hagar Artist area, all under the 'Unknown Album' title. So I 'rebuilt the iTunes database', thinking that it might help. Well, it didn't. Everything is still under 'Unknown Album', but the tracks are numbered as if they were in an album list. (Like 5 number '1', 5 number '2', etc...) I haven't even looked for the Podcasts, and Apps, etc, post rebuild. I am not that brave at the moment...

So, what the heck went wrong? Was the database corrupt? I checked out the old .XML file for iTunes (you move it as part of the rebuild) and it looks 'OK'. Wrong, but 'OK'...

The previous day I had been adding missing Album Art, and consolidating some of the tracks, etc, so I wonder if I started this thing out on its bender that killed Sammy Hagar. I don't think that I have all that much in my iTunes database, compared to some people that I've heard of. It says 15,500 items after clicking on 'All Artists'. I've heard of people having 60,000 items, and up...

I hope I don't have to reload all of my CD's. I did that a few years ago after I had a hard drive fail, and for some reason Time Machine wasn't backing up my iTunes at all. It took nearly a week! I actually thought of paying someone to do it for me... (And now my 'Magic Mouse', if by magic, won't scroll)

Thanks for reading, and I hope someone has heard of this happening...

I guess I need to know: Is it possible to remove an 'Artist'/'Album' from the 'Compilations' area, and how. Is my iTunes really gone south. Should I be in changing things around for tracks and albums. (Like I found that often 'missing album artwork' is just because the CDDB (I assume) album name isn't the album name that the artwork is attached to)

Thanks...:)
