Sound notifications not working on iMac/Mountain Lion

Hi - downloaded Mountion Lion - all working fine except I don't get a sound alert for emails/messages/calender etc. I've been into System preferences and the sound box is ticked on all of them, the sound is on, speakers working fine.

Any ideas?
