Hi Everyone,
I'm posting this here because I looked around forever and could never figure out what was up with my computer or what to do about it, so maybe it can help someone else out.
I had a process called rastertoHPZJS running on my older Macbook Pro (late 2006) under the user _lp. It's not considered a fast computer anymore (by me or anyone else), but it's been running dog slow for several months, even after swapping in a new 7200rpm hard drive and doing a Time Machine restore.
What was going on???
So rasterToHPZJS. It only showed in Activity Monitor if set to "All Processes" rather than "My Processes". It ate up between 450MB-550MB of REAL MEMORY on a machine that only holds 3GB. You'd think Mac's memory management would handle that pretty well, but for some reason this one bogged down the whole computer. F That.
So here's how you fix it:
1. Open Activity Monitor, view "All Processes", arrange by user and look for _lp, or just by name for rasterToHPZJS. Sort by real memory use, it'll be in your top 10.
2. Go to applications and uninstall all HP Printer Software using HP's Uninstaller. I then used AppCleaner to make sure what was left was gone gone. Reboot.
3. In Activity Monitor, sample the process for rasterToHPZJS, it'll show you the path to the file that's running. It's in HD/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet. I believe on mine the process was running out of the HP Laserjetzjs.bundle, but verify this for yourself. What you want dead is what is running rasterToHPZJS. Locate it in the finder.
4. Once located, hop back over to Activity Monitor and Kill rasterToHPZJS. Go to the finder, and delete the offending file (probably Laserjetzjs.bundle if yours is like mine). Reboot.
5. Try and print something to your HP Printer, it won't work. Good. Go to support.apple.com and get APPLE'S version of the "HP Printer Drivers" - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907 - the one I have is 2.14, who knows what it'll be when you do this. Apple's version is waaaaay better.
6. Install Apple's HP Printer Drivers from support.apple.com and you're good to go. It'll generate a new HP Laserjetzjs.bundle, but that one seems ok and doesn't run this rasterToHPZJS process that kills your computer. Maybe reboot for kicks, permissions repair, whatever. Do a test print.
Printing and Scanning
Printing just works with Apple's HP Printer Drivers. If you're worried about needing to scan (like I was when I installed HP's junk), just use Apple's Image Capture (built in and good). The rest of HP's stuff is pretty useless bloatware, and definitely not worth the performance hit to your computer. I honestly don't know how they come up with the software they do, it's really that awful. Maybe someone just halfass does this so they can keep their job. Whatever, it sucks.
Where did it come from?
It seems that I got this software from my HP Printer that I bought last year, a Laserjet 1536dnf (hence user _lp). It's also possible I picked it up from another HP Printer I had printed on at an office, there were several in my saved printers, I uninstalled them all using HP's Utility.
Should I use the drivers that came with my printer? Wouldn't they be the best for it?
I've heard people say not to use anyone but Apple's Printer Drivers, but I didn't listen and it made my computer suck to use for a year. Once I deleted the program my Macbook Pro was alive again. Scrolling isn't jerky, programs are responsive, it's just the way it used to be. When I type, the letters show up right away. This thing was really doing a number on my computer, which will probably end up as a NAS & Media Server before long.
This thread sent me down this road: https://discussions.apple.com/thread...art=0&tstart=0
Following it, I installed the Apple HP Drivers, but initially rastertoHPZJS remained, and that's the main problem, so I went in, did what I wrote above, and then reinstalled Apple's HP Drivers. Way worth it.

Hope it helps someone else.
