Need help with iTunes 10.7 w/ external library on MBA

First off, here's what I have. MacBook Air (mid 2011) connected to a Mercury Elite AL Pro Qx2 via USB 2.0. The external storage is usually connected to my Mac mini via firewire since it's my main machine. My iTunes library is kept on the external and the mini was running the most recent version of iTunes 11. I have volunteered to be the "DJ" at my class reunion and planned on using the iTunes DJ feature to allow people to request songs and browse my library either through their personal phones or with my iPad that I will have set up. I realized today iTunes 11 removed the iTunes DJ feature completely. I knew about "up next" but I hadn't really used it at all.

I decided to try and download iTunes 10.7 on my MBA and hook up the external drives and point iTunes to that external library (I don't use iTunes on my MBA at all anyway so I didn't care). The drive shows up on my desktop but it is not viewable in finder or the sidebar so when I go to iTunes preferences>advanced to change the media folder location, I can't see the external drives.

My questions are:
1) Is what I'm attempting to do even possible? Is the media folder on the external drive "locked" to the iTunes on my mini? If it is possible, then why is my external drive not showing up finder for iTunes to see?

2) Would it be worth it to try and downgrade iTunes on the mini and rebuild my library (which is almost 1 TB in size including movies/TV shows/music/music videos/books/etc).

3)Is there another way to get iTunes to have a similar function like iTunes DJ. I'm really not too fond of the Up Next.
